Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for men. According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons statistics, 63,585 men underwent nose reshaping in 2010, representing 25% of the total. Each year, this figure increases substantially, as more men opt for cosmetic surgery. More and more men are seeking out rhinoplasy. They undergo this surgery both as a way to improve their appearance and self esteem, and to repair structural issues such as a broken nose suffered during a sports game or breathing problems caused by a deviated septum.
Nose job surgeries are performed in the same manner whether the patient is male or female. However, each procedure is customized to the patient's wishes to achieve the aesthetic result they desire. Many of these aesthetic wishes are based, at least in part, on gender. Females, for example, tend to prefer softer features, while men prefer well-defined facial features. Nose jobs on men tend to focus on augmentation as opposed to the trimming away of tissues to make the nose smaller.
Most men's noses are more prominent features on their face, with more projection than women's noses. While most women seek a narrower nose, most men want a wider nose. A man's nose will look odd if the tip is upturned or the bridge is made too narrow.
Most men who undergo cosmetic surgery do not want to end up with features that appear 'feminine.' Rhinoplasty surgery for male patients must be planned in such a way to take these considerations into account along with the patient's individual desires regarding their post-surgery appearance.
